APOPONG PARTICIPATES LUNG MONTH CELEBRATION

General Santos City - Early morning of August 15 was the official Opening of the Lung Month Celebration of the city. Spearheaded by the City Health Office with the support of the Local Government Unit and Barangay Officials , a Walk for Cause signaled the start of the annual celebration of Lung Month.

Apopong, through its Barangay Council had been actively participating the celebration for years now. We had been consistent in supporting the programs and activities of the City Health Office. From the Barangay Council down to the Barangay Health Workers, we never failed to attend and answer most of the invitations.

Awarded on the same day, Barangay Apopong had been one of the Barangays who were recognized for their  active participation of this particular cause.

Foremost to the health events is the National Lung Month where the Department of Health (DOH) and the medical associations and non-governmental organizations focus the public's attention on the pulmonary system and illnesses of the lungs and urge everyone to contribute to a better and healthier environment so that the chemical exchange that takes place in one's lungs and detoxifies in one's body is sustained.
Lung Cancer Awareness Week reminds the public that smoking causes lung cancer. A study found that over 15,000 Filipinos may die of lung cancer in 2005. A joint study of the Philippine Cancer Society and the Department of Health (DOH) shows that about 43 Filipinos are estimated to die everyday in 2005 due to lung cancer, which is considered the top cancer site in the Philippines followed by breast cancer. The 2005 Philippine Cancer Facts and Estimates also estimated that 17,238 new cases of lung cancer will occur next year and 15,695 deaths are expected from it.
While cigarette smoking causes lung cancer, non-smokers who are continuously exposed to tobacco smoke, especially in enclosed spaces, likewise have a higher risk of imbibing the disease.
